¨ It was wonderful to see so many parents at the ELAC meeting this week. Dr. Jose Navarro did an outstanding job
providing advice to parents about the power and impact of gaining a formal education.

¨ Safe travels and good luck to our amazing Latin program led by Mr. Tom Weinschenk as they travel to the Latin
Convention in Irvine, California.

¨ Safe travels to our Choir as they compete this weekend in the Fullerton Music Festival.

¨ Congratulations to Boys’ & Girls’ Swim & Dive, Boys’ Tennis, Boys’ Volleyball, Boys’ & Girls’ Track & Field
ALL Won on Thursday. Go Tigers!

¨ Congratulations to Sam Pal, Carolyn Amir, Mia Abram and Emily Luchetta, who were selected as winners in the
County-wide writing competition.

¨ Tickets are now on sale for the Barn Bash (Saturday, April 26 at 6:00 pm) supporting the SLOHS FFA & Ag Department.
There will be a BBQ Dinner, music, and live and silent auctions items. Tickets are $50 per person and are
available from Farm Supply (SLO), or by contacting Shelly Phillips ( ).

¨ NEXT WEEK: Administration will be distributing the Academic Excellence Award Certificates during 2nd period.

¨ MONDAY: Late start for students with classes beginning at 9:30AM. Staff TCT will be in J-2 at 8:00AM.

¨ MONDAY: Come out and watch our FFA students prepare for the State Finals in Public Speaking. 5:30-7:00PM in
the Lecture Demo room (516).

¨ MONDAY: The Grad Night Parent Committee will meet at 7:00 PM in the library. We are in need of parent volunteers
to help us create a fantastic event for the CLASS of 2014! COME PAY IT FORWARD and help us finalize celebration

¨ WEDNESDAY & THURDSAY: All incoming 9th grade students and their parents are asked to attend the orientation
meeting in J-2 from 6:30-8:00PM. Come hear from our students and administration about all the options available

¨ THURSDAY: Safe travels and good luck to Our SLOHS Band who will be travelling to the Reno Jazz Festival with
stops at the University of Pacific along the way.

¨ THURSDAY: Our award winning Ag. Program will travel to Fresno to compete in the State Ag. Convention. Good
luck to all of our students in their competitions.

¨ FRIDAY: ASB students will host our Mock Rock Competition in the NEW GYM at 7PM. $4 with ASB $6 without.

¨ If you haven’t had a chance to see the school-play A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream, we will have the last showing
tonight at 6:30PM. Admission is $5 for students / $7 for adults.

¨ Congratulations to ASB for hosting another fantastic Spring Spirit Rally. It was great to see students and staff getting
involved in the lip synch competition. The Annex boys were pretty terrific!

¨ Spring sports are going well with impressive wins for Girls’ softball and Track & Field. The Boys’ Volleyball,
Boys’ Golf and Boys’ Tennis teams remain undefeated in league play. Good job Tiger athletes!

¨ Congratulations to the San Luis Obispo High School FFA Chapter on their nomination as a State Finalist for the
National Chapter Award. Our students & teachers will be recognized at the State FFA conference. Well done Aggies!

¨ The SLOHS Band is also traveling to Fresno for a competition they’re sure to win. Good luck!

¨ Congratulations to Jonathan & Caleb Rabbon on their outstanding performances in the Nor Cal Jr. Olympics State
Championship in Gymnastics. They are part of Nor-Cal All -Star Team that will compete at the Men’s Region 1 Gymnastics
Championship at Phoenix, Arizona in April.

¨ Thank you to all the parents, students & staff who ate at CHIPOTLE on Wednesday night to fund the Dave Melton
Memorial Math Scholarship fundraiser. We raised $800 during the event – enough for 2 scholarships!


¨ TUESDAY: The English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) will meet in the library at 6:30PM. We will have a
guest speaker, Dr. Jose Navarro, speaking about how a formal education can improve the lives of children and
what we can do to motivate them. All are welcome to attend.

¨ WEDNESDAY: Attention all senior students, Cuesta College will be on campus Wednesday, April 2nd at 7PM. If
Cuesta is in your plans for fall 2014 and your student is a senior you don’t want to miss this presentation! Please
attend and learn how you can support your transitioning adult student to college life at Cuesta.

¨ With ¾ of the school year behind us and Graduation fast approaching, it is important to remember that the
final push until June will be filled with important dates, tests and celebrations. To stay on top on of all the
information, please visit our website, check the daily bulletin, & talk with your students. Parents… please
call the Attendance Office when clearing absences and when clearing students ahead of time for appts.
Thank you for helping Mr. Frost & Mr. Black and the Attendance office Staff. Our truancy rates keep improving.
Last year at this time our truancy rate was 41% while this year it has dropped to 32%! Let’s keep up the
great work.

¨ Thank you parents, staff and students who came out and supported our SLOHS Band during their performance on
Monday night at the Cuesta Performing Arts Center. Congratulations to our concert band who received three scores
of “Excellent” at the County Band Festival.

¨ Kudos to Jeff Brandow & Joyce Villa for hosting our Winters Sports Awards Night for parents and studentathletes.
Many student athletes were recognized at this event.

¨ Congratulations to Lisa Wasmuth and the FHA-Hero club for hosting the inaugural SLOHS “Iron Chef” Competition
With many celebrity contestants, the event was a who’s who of SLOHS.

¨ Congratulations to our Spring Sports teams. The Boys’ Varsity Tennis team won the Division 3 Championship at
the California Tennis Classic in Fresno, while the Boys’ Golf team is off to a 1-0 start in league play. Our Boys’

¨ SLOHS FFA brought home the awards at the recent UC Davis competition with Kalena Cirone (1st in Greed) Am-
ber Bjerre, Darcy Hummel, Hailey & Brynn Robella placing in the Veterinary Science contest. Emily Lewis, Cait-
lin Stanton, Maddie Mundorf & Annie Stenger took first place in Floral team competition. Well done Aggies!
¨ Our Spring play “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” opens this weekend with shows on Friday at 6:30 pm on Saturday
and Sunday at 2:00pm. Admission is $5 for students / $7 for adults. Come out to enjoy these wonderful thespians

¨ Good luck to our amazing Robotics Team and their instructor Jan Fetcho as they head off to the state tournament
in Santa Clara this weekend.

¨ TUESDAY & WEDNESDAY: 10th Grade students will take the CAHSEE. Students are encouraged to get a full
night’s rest, eat a nutritious breakfast and report to their test location before 8:00 a.m.

¨ WEDNESDAY: Instructional Cabinet will meet in the Principal’s Conference Room from 3:30-4:30PM.

¨ WEDNESDAY: The DELAC will meet at Laguna Middle School in the staff lounge room from 6:00- 7:30PM.

¨ With the first week of the trimester now ending, we have two weeks until Spring Break and there are
many important events coming up in the interim.

¨ The Early Assessment Program (EAP) will be administered to 11th grade students on Wednesday,
March 12th with the Make-up day on Friday, March 14th. 11th graders have the ability to score
well and these scores will exempt them from remedial courses in college.

¨ Students will receive their 2014-15 course selection registration materials on Tuesday, March
11th during 2nd period. The Student Course Selection Card needs to be signed by a parent and all
courses must be entered into PowerSchool NO LATER THAN Thursday, March 20th. If you
have any questions, please see your counselor.

¨ SATURDAY , March 8th: FHA-Hero will host SLOHS’ version of Iron Chef in the Home Economics
kitchen at NOON . All our welcome to attend The Superintendent and many of the District office
staff will be in a hot competition along with a silent auction. Cost is $5 with taste tests during the


¨ MONDAY, March 10th—TCT in J-2. Staff will continue our discussion around final exams and
grading practices.

¨ Varsity Girls’ Soccer & Basketball experienced tough losses this week in the CIF play-offs. They
had outstanding seasons and their efforts are to be commended.

¨ Congratulations to the recent Regional Skills USA winners. 20 SLOHS students are advancing to
the State competition having won 10 gold, 5 silver & 3 bronze medals. Well done to all the students
involved and their amazing teachers Jan Fetcho, Tim Fay and Jeff Lehmkuhl.

¨ ATTN PARENTS of SENIORS! This is it…March 2nd is the very last day to complete and submit
the Cuesta App, the Cuesta Promise Scholarship and the FAFSA if you’d like your student to
attend Cuesta this fall for FREE! After applying, applicants must wait for a login ID, so please start

¨ Congratulations to Scott Hicks on winning the Lions Club Int. Public Speaking Contest. Scott will now represent SLOHS at the Regional Competition. Good luck Scot!

¨ Congratulations to our Girls’ Basketball team on their first round play-off win last week. The Lady tigers and Coach Monroe advanced to play La Canada High School on Saturday evening where they lost a close contest by just 2 points. Well done Lady Tigers Basketball!.

¨ Boys’ Soccer suffered a tough loss last week after winning the PAC 7 title this year. Next season looks bright with so many returners on the team.

¨ Girls’ Soccer won their first play-off game on Friday 4-0. They will now play at Cypress High School on Wednesday with a 3PM kick-off. Good luck to the Girls Soccer team.

¨ Thank you to all parents who attended the Friday morning coffee with the Principal. We had great conversations about instructional issues pertaining to our school.

¨ Ruby Callahan & Charlie Teaford  have been selected by the American Legion Post #66 to be SLOHS representatives to Girls and Boys State this June. Dorothy Monza & John-O Roberts are their alternates. Congratulations!


¨ Finals are next week. TUESDAY students will have periods 1-4 before lunch with 5th period final from 1:10-3:10PM.

¨ Mock Trial update: This week our team lost a hard fought contest against Templeton High School. Senior Brendan Bych was awarded Most Outstanding Opponent by the opposing team and Omar Rahim was recognized as “best witness.” Jenny Grady (our pretrial attorney) deserves special praise for an outstanding performance in this semi- final round. Thank parents, students and staff for their support of this outstanding program.

¨ Congratulations to our FFA Students who recently competed in the Sectional Speaking Contests: Benjamin Peterson (1st), Luke O’Leary (2nd) and Joelle Lewis (4th) in Prepared Speech. Jessie Judge & Aidan Munoz Christian (2nd) in Job Interview. Impromtu Speech Amber Bjerre (2nd) and Extemporaneous Speech: Mara Basich Pease (1st), Evan New Schmidt (2nd). The Advanced Parli-Pro Team Was Second at the Modesto Parli-Pro Invitational with Luke O’Leary, Joelle Lewis & Aidan Christian-Munoz all awarded High Debate Awards.

¨ Winter Sports are nearing an end this week. Come out and cheer on the Girls & Boys Soccer teams tonight as they continue to battle for a PAC-7 title. Games are 5PM and 7PM.

¨ Special praise for Girls’ Varsity Basketball for battling back from a 35-14 half-time deficit to win 44-43 to keep their
playoff hopes alive against St. Joe’s.

¨ Kudos to the SLOHS Band members who were part of the County Honor Band’s performance at Cal Poly.

¨ It was standing room only in the SLOHS Theatre for the production of “The Shadowbox”. Well done to our amazing director Kate Stephens all the actors involved.

¨ Congratulations to our Choir for an outstanding performance at the Winter Pops show. Thank you to all the parents and staff members who were in attendance.

¨ Special praise goes to our Mock Trial students this week. Joshua Dorman and Ruby Callahan won most valuable
player awards from the other teams in this week’s competition. SLOHS advisor James Bruce said that “if you closed
your eyes and simply listened you’d have thought you were in a real trial and you’d have been glad to have one of
our students as your attorney.” Well done to all the Mock Trial students and their advisors Marianne Elefant and
James Bruce.

¨ Congratulations to Krisse Miller on her amazing performance at the County-wide Poetry Out Loud competition.
Krissie represented our school and we are very proud of her outstanding performance.

¨ It was standing room only at the Financial Aid workshop sponsored by Cuesta College on Wednesday night. It was
great to see so many parents and students pick up tips and information regarding the financial aid process.

¨ FHA-HERO is taking 12 students to competition at Menlo-Atherton H.S. this Sat. The top winners will be eligible to
compete at their State Leadership Meeting and Competition in April in Riverside. Good luck to all involved!

¨ Don’t forge to come out and support the Drama Club’s Production of “The Shadowbox” this weekend. Show times
are Friday at 4PM and 7PM. Saturday at 2PM and 7PM. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students.

¨ It was wonderful to see 40 of our AVID students board the charter bus this morning with AVID teachers James
Bruce, Eldra Avery and Rita Delkeskamp for their college visit to UC Merced and Fresno State. Well done AVID!

THURSDAY: Theatre 2 students as well as the Improv Troupe will perform in the Theatre at lunchtime.

FRIDAY: VAPA Assemblies in the New Gym at 10:30 and 11:30AM respectively.

¨ Thank you everyone who helped to ‘Pack the Stands’ last week at the Varsity Soccer Games. The pre-game tailgate
was a great success. Thank you Tiger Athletic Boosters!

¨ Poetry Out Loud was an academic success. James Bruce and his English department colleagues did a wonderful
job hosting this competition. The winners were: Cormac Duffy (9), Sam Pal (10), and Danielle Diaz (11) and, Rohan
Nijhawan (12). Our school winner was Krissie Miller (11). Krissie now advances to the County competition
on February 7th. Thank you Black & Gold for donating the prizes and supporting this competition.

¨ Good luck to our SLO-Botics team in the Cal Poly competition this weekend. Go Tigers!

¨ Great job Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball teams on spirited performances against St. Joes this week. Come out and
support our BBallers TONIGHT as they tackle Righetti at home 5PM & 7PM.

¨ PARKING REMINDERS: SLOPD will be ticketing in our parking lot if vehicles are parked in the red zones. School
property will be enforced like it is part of the city’s property. Passenger loading is not a parking spot. Drivers must
remain at their car. PLEASE help us maintain our emergency access.

¨ SENIORS and SENIOR PARENTS— NOW is the time to apply to Cuesta for Fall 2014. …even if it’s just a backup
plan. If you complete the application, the FAFSA and the Cuesta Promise Scholarship, all your fees for Fall
2014 will be covered!! Apply today.

¨ MONDAY: January 27th: TCT will be in J-2 with staff. Please bring the writing samples for the “writing across the
curriculum project.” First period starts at 9:30AM for students.

¨ TUESDAY: 10th grade students will have their Vision and Hearing Screening during their World History classes.

¨ WEDNESDAY: Instructional Cabinet will meet in the Principal’s Conference Room 3:30-4:30PM

¨ FRIDAY: Career Day will be on campus. Over 60 Community Partners, Cuesta College & Cal Poly share their programs
and career pathways. The event starts at 9:20 AM for all juniors!

¨ AP Exam Info: Students will be able to register for AP Exams from January 13 through February 7 in the ASB Office
and are encouraged to register early to avoid long lines on the last few days. The cost of each exam is $89.00.

¨ Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, February 5th the Counseling Department will host a Financial Aid Night for
12th grade parents. Spanish meeting begins at 6 PM; English at 7 PM.
