¨ Varsity Girls’ Soccer & Basketball experienced tough losses this week in the CIF play-offs. They
had outstanding seasons and their efforts are to be commended.

¨ Congratulations to the recent Regional Skills USA winners. 20 SLOHS students are advancing to
the State competition having won 10 gold, 5 silver & 3 bronze medals. Well done to all the students
involved and their amazing teachers Jan Fetcho, Tim Fay and Jeff Lehmkuhl.

¨ ATTN PARENTS of SENIORS! This is it…March 2nd is the very last day to complete and submit
the Cuesta App, the Cuesta Promise Scholarship and the FAFSA if you’d like your student to
attend Cuesta this fall for FREE! After applying, applicants must wait for a login ID, so please start

THIS WEEK:

¨ Congratulations to Scott Hicks on winning the Lions Club Int. Public Speaking Contest. Scott will now represent SLOHS at the Regional Competition. Good luck Scot!

¨ Congratulations to our Girls’ Basketball team on their first round play-off win last week. The Lady tigers and Coach Monroe advanced to play La Canada High School on Saturday evening where they lost a close contest by just 2 points. Well done Lady Tigers Basketball!.

¨ Boys’ Soccer suffered a tough loss last week after winning the PAC 7 title this year. Next season looks bright with so many returners on the team.

¨ Girls’ Soccer won their first play-off game on Friday 4-0. They will now play at Cypress High School on Wednesday with a 3PM kick-off. Good luck to the Girls Soccer team.

¨ Thank you to all parents who attended the Friday morning coffee with the Principal. We had great conversations about instructional issues pertaining to our school.

¨ Ruby Callahan & Charlie Teaford  have been selected by the American Legion Post #66 to be SLOHS representatives to Girls and Boys State this June. Dorothy Monza & John-O Roberts are their alternates. Congratulations!

¨ CUESTA COLLEGE is requesting that if you plan to be awarded the CUESTA PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP ( up to $600 value) then a student MUST apply for admission, apply for FAFSA, and apply for the PROMISE SCHOLARSHIP by March 2nd!  This is a process that requires at least 3 days so please do it now!

¨ Mock Trial update: This week our team lost a hard fought contest against Templeton High School. Senior Brendan Bych was awarded Most Outstanding Opponent by the opposing team and Omar Rahim was recognized as “best witness.” Jenny Grady (our pretrial attorney) deserves special praise for an outstanding performance in this semi- final round. Thank parents, students and staff for their support of this outstanding program.

¨ Congratulations to our FFA Students who recently competed in the Sectional Speaking Contests: Benjamin Peterson (1st), Luke O’Leary (2nd) and Joelle Lewis (4th) in Prepared Speech. Jessie Judge & Aidan Munoz Christian (2nd) in Job Interview. Impromtu Speech Amber Bjerre (2nd) and Extemporaneous Speech: Mara Basich Pease (1st), Evan New Schmidt (2nd). The Advanced Parli-Pro Team Was Second at the Modesto Parli-Pro Invitational with Luke O’Leary, Joelle Lewis & Aidan Christian-Munoz all awarded High Debate Awards.

¨ Winter Sports are nearing an end this week. Come out and cheer on the Girls & Boys Soccer teams tonight as they continue to battle for a PAC-7 title. Games are 5PM and 7PM.

¨ Special praise for Girls’ Varsity Basketball for battling back from a 35-14 half-time deficit to win 44-43 to keep their
playoff hopes alive against St. Joe’s.

¨ Kudos to the SLOHS Band members who were part of the County Honor Band’s performance at Cal Poly.

¨ It was standing room only in the SLOHS Theatre for the production of “The Shadowbox”. Well done to our amazing director Kate Stephens all the actors involved.

¨ Congratulations to our Choir for an outstanding performance at the Winter Pops show. Thank you to all the parents and staff members who were in attendance.

¨ Thank you to the Music, Art, & Drama Depts. for organizing an entertaining VAPA week of lunchtime activities and for the VAPA assembly today.

THIS WEEK:

¨ Special praise goes to our Mock Trial students this week. Joshua Dorman and Ruby Callahan won most valuable
player awards from the other teams in this week’s competition. SLOHS advisor James Bruce said that “if you closed
your eyes and simply listened you’d have thought you were in a real trial and you’d have been glad to have one of
our students as your attorney.” Well done to all the Mock Trial students and their advisors Marianne Elefant and
James Bruce.

¨ Congratulations to Krisse Miller on her amazing performance at the County-wide Poetry Out Loud competition.
Krissie represented our school and we are very proud of her outstanding performance.

¨ It was standing room only at the Financial Aid workshop sponsored by Cuesta College on Wednesday night. It was
great to see so many parents and students pick up tips and information regarding the financial aid process.

¨ FHA-HERO is taking 12 students to competition at Menlo-Atherton H.S. this Sat. The top winners will be eligible to
compete at their State Leadership Meeting and Competition in April in Riverside. Good luck to all involved!

¨ Don’t forge to come out and support the Drama Club’s Production of “The Shadowbox” this weekend. Show times
are Friday at 4PM and 7PM. Saturday at 2PM and 7PM. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students.

¨ It was wonderful to see 40 of our AVID students board the charter bus this morning with AVID teachers James
Bruce, Eldra Avery and Rita Delkeskamp for their college visit to UC Merced and Fresno State. Well done AVID!

WEDNESDAY: SLO County Honor Band will perform at the Cohen Center on the Cal Poly campus starting at 7:00PM.

THURSDAY: Theatre 2 students as well as the Improv Troupe will perform in the Theatre at lunchtime.

FRIDAY: VAPA Assemblies in the New Gym at 10:30 and 11:30AM respectively.

¨ Thank you everyone who helped to ‘Pack the Stands’ last week at the Varsity Soccer Games. The pre-game tailgate
was a great success. Thank you Tiger Athletic Boosters!

¨ Poetry Out Loud was an academic success. James Bruce and his English department colleagues did a wonderful
job hosting this competition. The winners were: Cormac Duffy (9), Sam Pal (10), and Danielle Diaz (11) and, Rohan
Nijhawan (12). Our school winner was Krissie Miller (11). Krissie now advances to the County competition
on February 7th. Thank you Black & Gold for donating the prizes and supporting this competition.

¨ Good luck to our SLO-Botics team in the Cal Poly competition this weekend. Go Tigers!

¨ Great job Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball teams on spirited performances against St. Joes this week. Come out and
support our BBallers TONIGHT as they tackle Righetti at home 5PM & 7PM.

¨ PARKING REMINDERS: SLOPD will be ticketing in our parking lot if vehicles are parked in the red zones. School
property will be enforced like it is part of the city’s property. Passenger loading is not a parking spot. Drivers must
remain at their car. PLEASE help us maintain our emergency access.

¨ SENIORS and SENIOR PARENTS— NOW is the time to apply to Cuesta for Fall 2014. …even if it’s just a backup

¨ WEDNESDAY: Instructional Cabinet will meet in the Principal’s Conference Room 3:30-4:30PM

¨ FRIDAY: Career Day will be on campus. Over 60 Community Partners, Cuesta College & Cal Poly share their programs
and career pathways. The event starts at 9:20 AM for all juniors!

¨ AP Exam Info: Students will be able to register for AP Exams from January 13 through February 7 in the ASB Office
and are encouraged to register early to avoid long lines on the last few days. The cost of each exam is $89.00.

¨ Mark your calendars! On Wednesday, February 5th the Counseling Department will host a Financial Aid Night for
12th grade parents. Spanish meeting begins at 6 PM; English at 7 PM.

¨ Thank you to the Tiger Athletic Boosters and parents for donating two new vans to our school. They will be used
by our student body for years to come.

¨ Congratulations to the Senior Grad Night Committee on receiving a $1,000 donation from the Central Coast Funds
for Children. Our Grad Night committee does a fantastic job supporting our senior activities.

¨ Congratulations to our sports teams on spirited performances this week against Mission Prep, Paso Robles and
Righetti High Schools.

¨ Thank you to the Counseling Department for hosting the College Application workshop to a standing room only
crowd.

-Our Mock Trial team continues to prepare for the upcoming County Championships in February. The team had
scrimmages against Redwood High, Trinity Pacific. Saturday they scrimmage against San Marcos High School.
Good luck to all the Mock Trialers!

¨ Anna Bates, Ag.Teacher extraordinaire, has been recognized by the Tribune as one of the top local leaders in their
20 under 40! Way to go Anna!

¨ Good luck to our SLO Robotics team as they compete today in our local Robotics Competition. Go SLO Bots!

¨ Pack the Stands tonight (Girls 5 pm & Boys 7 pm) for our Varsity Soccer teams as we play AGHS. Tailgate with

¨ Thank you Ashley Mitchell & Mauria Nakamura for providing coffee and donuts to staff on their first day back to school this week. Our students never cease to amaze me.

¨ Thank you to the boys &  girls soccer players for volunteering at the soccer clinic with over 40 future little Tigers!

¨ Congratulations to Kaesha Freyaldenhoven for advancing to the Semifinal stage of the Coca Cola Scholars Program. We have 2 National Merit Semi Finalist: Elise Gubbins & Madeline Mundorf. Great job student scholars.

¨ Did you know that Steven Howard was the only SLO High football player who made the All-Star First Team. Great job Steven!

¨ This week was a busy one for sports-I got to watch my very first Tiger Wrestling match. Those wrestlers are some tough kids. Great win over St. Joes. We also had exciting wins by our boys’ and girls’ soccer teams.

¨ The 3rd SLO FFA Drive-thru BBQ is Wednesday, January 29th. Meals are $40 for one 1 whole tri-trip, beans, salad and bread. To order, please email to Jodi Evans (jevans@slcusd.org) by Wednesday, January 22nd. Meals can be picked up at the SLOHS Ag Department between 4:00-6:00 pm on the 29th.

SLOHS Connect – December 20, 2013

¨ Did you know that our Robotics team under the guidance of Jan Fetcho competed in a tournament in   Bakersfield? Two of our robots, 920A (Diana Chiu, Greg Waddell, Kaz Bishop,& Cole Coward) and 920E (Austin Wright, Joey Arhar, & Andrew Hibble) competed against each other in the quarter finals. Team 920E went on the semi-finals, finishing well. Team 920E won the Build Award for their “Craftsmanship & Construction” of the robot. Team 920A earned the right to go to the state tournament by winning the Design Award for the best “Engineering Process and Documentation” among the 48 robots at the tournament. Congratulations to these two groups of hardworking students!

¨ Did you know that our amazing Counseling Department hosted 95 parents for the CSU Parent Application Workshop and 135 parents for the UC Application Workshop this fall? They assisted 126 students in completing their applications for 4- year universities. They also assisted our 2 National Merit Finalists and 3 Hispanic Scholarship Students with their apps. Our Counseling staff continues to do amazing things for our students; thank you!

¨ Did you know that sophomore Bella Stenvall was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award for completing 100 hours of service for Big Brothers Big Sisters?  Bella was given a certificate signed by the president. This is her second year mentoring her “Little Sister” through the program. In addition to acting as a “Big” every Thursday after school, Bella also volunteers at the Winter WonderSLO fundraising and ice skating event, and she participated in the 2013 Bowl for Kids’ Sake campaign. Well done Bella!

¨ Did you know that Molly Maguire &  Holland Boege were recently selected to 1st team for the All

County Volleyball Team? We are very proud of these wonderful student-athletes.

¨ Did you know that Cuesta College is offering the PROMISE Scholarship to all SLO County 2014 high school graduates?  This new scholarship pays for all fees for the Fall 2014 Semester.  To qualify for the PROMISE Scholarship a student must; apply to Cuesta for Fall 2014, complete a FAFSA and complete the Cuesta PROMISE Scholarship Application…all no later than March 2nd , 2014.  www.cuesta.edu

¨ Did you know that The SLOHS Counselors will be presenting “The College Admissions Process” for our parents of 11th graders on Wednesday, January 15th at 7pm in the SLOHS Cafeteria?  Be sure to attend to hear all about required testing, course requirements and helpful planning tips!

¨ A variety of pre-break activities occurred this week with the Band and Choral groups serenading through campus on Friday. This is what makes SLOHS special!

¨ What a wonderful performance last night from our Choir under the direction of Mrs. Pitcairn-Glimpse. The student performers rocked the building. Thank you parents for being in attendance.

THIS WEEK:

¨ Kudos to all the students from Ag. and International club who participated in the Downtown Christmas parade. Our drum line and band were terrific leading the parade.

¨ The Jazz Band performance at the Madonna Inn was warmly received by all in attendance. It was wonderful to see and hear from our student performers.

¨ There was standing room only at the Band Concert. Band Director Sharon Jeskey does an amazing job preparing our students for their performances.

¨ Ag. Teacher Anna Bates was recognized by the SLCUSD Trustees & Dr. Eric Prater for her award as Santa Lucia ROP Teacher of the Year. Congratulations to Anna on her outstanding achievement.

¨ Art teachers Deborah Sanz & Cherie Jones presented at the recent School Board meeting on their       respective projects. Deborah presented on her students’ “Memory Project” and Cherie gave the Board an insight into Tiger News Network. Their students would be very proud of these two gifted educators.

¨ Thank you Dr. Rita Delkeskamp for leading another informative ELAC parent meeting this week.

¨ Winter Sports are in full flight. We had key victories for Girls’ & Boys’ Basketball and Soccer and Girls’ Water Polo. Our wrestlers continue to train and work hard. They have quickly become one of our most improved programs on campus under the leadership of Coach Brandon Drucker. Go Tigers!

¨  Special praise to our English teachers: James Bruce, Craig Stewart & Scott Nairne for leading our staff TCT on how to improve writing across the curriculum. We will continue the conversation next week at TCT.

¨ SATURDAY, December 14  @ 7 PM. COFFEE NIGHT sponsored by the Theatre Department is a Variety Show with a Disney theme. Coffee and goodies will be available during intermission. Admission to the show is $5 for students/ $7 for adults.

NEXT WEEK: Academic Excellence Certificates will be distributed to students in their 2nd period classes.

¨ MONDAY: TCT will be in J-2 for staff. School starts at 9:30 AM.

¨ MONDAY: School Site Council will meet in the library at 6:30PM. We will review the School Safety Plan and receive feedback from the group on last week’s Back To School Night. Please join us!

¨ THURSDAY: The Winter Choral Concert will be at 6:30 pm at the United Methodist Church on Johnson Ave.  It will feature all three choirs from SLOHS as well as the choir from LAMS.
