Introduction to Fashion Interiors

College Entrance: Meets half year of UC/CSU (g) Visual & Performing Arts requirement
This course enables the student to apply the design elements and principles in a variety of areas. These include clothing and textile projects, and interior design projects. Activity examples are creating fashions, sewing projects, and designing a room. This course serves as the foundation for Interior Design and Fashion Design.
Fashion Design

The first trimester of this course will enable students to understand and apply the elements and principles of design. The elements and principles of design analysis are related to fashion design, body type, personality, fabrics and manufactured clothing. Textile exploration helps students to understand the different types of textiles and their uses. Techniques of clothing construction are adapted to current fashion and the needs of the students. Activity examples: working with the elements and principles of design, designing clothing for different body shapes, analysis of personal colors, selection of patterns, fabrics, small sewing tools and equipment; construction of projects; and identification of fibers and fabrics. The second trimester of this course will enable students to expand their skills in collection design, textiles and clothing construction. The major emphasis is to develop skills in pattern adaptation, clothing alteration. Current trends in the fashion industry and careers, along with personal talents, skills, and experiences will be analyzed. Activity examples: designing a collection and analyzing costs, constructing complicated designs and fabrics, designing textiles, and reporting on a famous designer.
Interior Design

College Entrance: Meets one year of UC/CSU Visual & Performing Arts (F)/Visual Arts
The first trimester of this course will enable students to gain skills in designing and decorating personal living areas. The elements and principles of design will be studied and analyzed, used in floor plans, furniture arrangements, and creative decorating. Historical architecture and furniture will be one of the areas of study. Activity examples are: analyzing the elements and principles of design, as well as historical architecture and furniture; learning to use drafting equipment and then drawing floor plans, reading blueprints, coordinating the backgrounds, furniture, and fixtures environments, and creating a cohesive design.
The second trimester enables students to understand and produce kitchen design, apply their knowledge of the fundamentals of interior design in producing professional presentation boards for personal and commercial design projects. Textile design as it applies to furniture using the elements and principles of design is implemented. Sustainable products and design, and famous architects/interior designers are researched. The relationship between the architectural design of the exterior and the interior is analyzed. Career possibilities related to this area are explored. Activity examples: different kitchen designs, learning to draw two types of 3D design, research presentations of sustainable products and famous architects/interior designers, designing multiple room plans for homes or commercial interiors, and designing by computer.
Fashion and Interior Merchandising

Students in the Fashion Design and Merchandising career pathway establish a foundation in all aspects of the fashion industry. Students pursuing this career path study the industry; laws and regulations; operational procedures and safety; history of fashion; fashion forecasting; textiles and textile products; design principles and elements; merchandising and fashion forecasting; garment manufacturing; product knowledge and apparel merchandising; sales and services; visual merchandising; inventory control and loss prevention; pattern making for apparel design; developing and merchandising a line; textile design; garment alteration and repair; and care and cleaning of apparel. Fashion design, manufacturing, and merchandising students also learn employment and management skills. Students pursuing the Interior Design and Furnishings career pathway study all aspects of the field including the principles and elements of interior design; space planning and interior systems; window, wall, and floor fabrication and installation; furniture construction; sales and merchandising; history of furniture and design; laws and regulations; operational procedures and professionalism; residential and commercial design. Interior Design and Furnishings students also learn employment and management skills.
